What: Workshop for Science Fiction and Fantasy Scholars
When: June 25, 2015
Where: On a Cruise Ship from Turku to Mariehamn, en route to Archipelacon
The deadline for submitting abstracts is 15 April, 2015 (at 23:59).
This summer Archipelacon – The Nordic Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention in Mariehamn brings together a wide range of scholarly perspectives on the speculative and the fantastic during its Academic Track. Presentations of papers span over three days, participating in the discussion on the many ways which genres such as fantasy, science fiction, and horror take its readers, users, and consumers beyond the boundaries of the actual.
The Archipelacon Academic Track takes the place of the traditional, annual conference of science fiction and fantasy scholars, which is usually hosted in conjunction with Finncon. However, The Finnish Society for Science Fiction and Fantasy Research (Finfar) also organises a more casual workshop for students and scholars of all levels on board the cruise ship from Turku to Mariehamn on Thursday 25 June – en route to Archipelacon! The ship in question is the Tallink Silja cruise ship leaving Turku at 8.15 a.m. It is now possible to book a place to the ship via Archipelacon!
The workshop is for all kinds of scholars focusing on science fiction and fantasy who want peer support and expert comments – whether you are working towards a seminar essay, article, MA thesis or a PhD.
Due to the participatory nature of the workshop and limitations on time and space, the workshop is open only for the participants and designated commentators.
The commentators at the workshop will include Dr Merja Polvinen (University of Helsinki), Ph.L. Hanna-Riikka Roine (University of Tampere), Ph.D. Katja Kontturi (University of Jyväskylä), M.A. Kaisa Kortekallio (University of Helsinki), Ph.D. Sanna Lehtonen (University of Jyväskylä), M.A. Juha Raipola (University of Tampere) and Dr Liisa Rantalaiho (University of Tampere).
Please send your 300-word abstract describing the content of your proposed paper, and a few words about yourself and your studies by 15 April, 2015 to hanna.roine(at)uta.fi with title “SHIP WORKSHOP 2015 ABSTRACT [YOUR NAME]”. The final paper should be 10,000–15,000 characters in length. You can submit a paper either in Finnish or English.
Selection will be made and further instructions sent in early May.
Please note that it is possible to take part in the workshop without attending Archipelacon: you can board the cruise ship from Turku in the morning and, once we arrive in Mariehamn, take another ship straight back to Turku, arriving just after 7 p.m. on the same day.
Welcome to the fantastic workshop!
If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact either Merja (merja.polvinen(at)helsinki.fi) or Hanna (hanna.roine(at)uta.fi).
